Your First Conversation

Welcome — you are about to have your very first conversation with an AI. There is nothing to worry about. You cannot break it, and it will never judge you for asking a simple question.

Open your browser and go to chat.openai.com. If you do not have an account yet, click "Sign up" and follow the steps — it takes about three minutes and you only need an email address. Once you are logged in, you will see a large text box at the bottom of the screen. That is where you type your question.

Try this right now: type "Hello, can you tell me one interesting fact about Poland?" and press Enter (or tap the blue arrow). In a few seconds ChatGPT will write back. It might surprise you how naturally it answers. You can reply, ask for more detail, or change the subject entirely — just as you would in a real conversation.

One of the most useful features is voice input. On a smartphone or tablet, look for the small microphone icon inside the text box. Tap it, speak your question clearly, and the app will turn your words into text and send them automatically. This is wonderful if typing feels slow or uncomfortable.

Remember: ChatGPT does not know who you are unless you tell it. It cannot access your bank account, read your emails, or see your photos. It simply reads what you type and responds. Start with easy, everyday questions — "What is the weather like in Kraków today?" or "Can you suggest a quick recipe for tomato soup?" — and you will quickly feel at home.

Everyday Assistance

Now that you have had your first conversation, let's explore the everyday tasks where AI can save you time and effort. Think of ChatGPT as a very patient assistant who never gets tired of your questions.

Writing messages is one of the most popular uses. Perhaps you need to write a polite letter to your doctor's surgery, a thank-you note to a neighbour, or a birthday greeting for a grandchild who lives far away. Simply tell ChatGPT: "Please help me write a warm birthday message for my granddaughter who is turning 18. She loves music and dancing." ChatGPT will draft something for you, and you can ask it to make it longer, shorter, funnier, or more formal.

Recipes are another joy. Ask "What can I cook for dinner if I have potatoes, onions, cheese, and some leftover chicken?" and you will receive a complete recipe with step-by-step instructions. You can ask it to adjust for one person, avoid certain ingredients, or make it suitable for someone who cannot eat much spice.

Travel planning is surprisingly easy too. Try: "I would like to visit Zakopane for three days in September. What are the best things to do, and what should I pack?" ChatGPT will give you a helpful overview. Always double-check specific opening times and prices on official websites, but the general ideas it provides are an excellent starting point.

Understanding official letters and documents is perhaps the most valuable everyday use. Paste the confusing paragraph from a letter and ask "Can you explain this in simple language?" — it is like having a helpful family member on call, twenty-four hours a day.

Family and Memories

Some of the most meaningful things we can do with AI are deeply personal — preserving family stories, writing heartfelt messages, and staying connected with the people we love.

Every family has stories worth keeping. Perhaps your grandparents came to the city from a small village, or you remember what your street looked like fifty years ago. ChatGPT can help you turn these memories into beautiful written stories. Start by telling it a few key facts: "My grandfather was born in 1920 in a small village near Kraków. He was a carpenter. Please help me write a short story about his life." ChatGPT will create a first draft, and then you can add details, correct anything that is wrong, and make it truly yours.

Writing to loved ones who live far away is another wonderful use. If you find it hard to start a letter or find the right words, try: "Help me write a warm letter to my daughter in London. I want to tell her about my garden this summer and how much I miss her." The AI will give you a starting point that you can personalise.

You can also use AI to help you caption old photographs before sharing them. Describe the photo and ask for a short, meaningful caption: "I have a photograph of my family at Christmas in 1975. There are eight people around a table. Can you help me write a caption for it?"

These are small acts, but they matter enormously. The stories we save today become the treasures that our children and grandchildren will read for generations. AI is simply a patient helper — the memories and the love are entirely yours.

Safety and Confidence

Using AI confidently means knowing not just what it can do, but also what to watch out for. This chapter gives you the practical knowledge to use AI safely every day.

The most important rule: never give AI your passwords, bank details, National Insurance number, or passport number. ChatGPT does not need this information for any legitimate task. If you ever receive a message — by email, text, or phone — from someone claiming to be "AI support" or "ChatGPT service" asking for personal or financial details, it is a scam. Ignore it completely and report it if you can.

AI can make mistakes. It is not a doctor, a lawyer, or a financial adviser. When ChatGPT gives you health information, use it as a starting point for a conversation with your GP — not as a final answer. When it tells you about legal matters, verify everything with a qualified professional. Think of it as a well-meaning friend who reads a lot but sometimes gets things wrong.

One of the most useful safety skills is fact-checking. If ChatGPT tells you something that surprises you or seems too dramatic, ask it: "How confident are you about this? What sources would you recommend I check?" You can also search for the same information in a newspaper or official website.

Scam messages often create a sense of urgency — "You must act now!", "Your account will be closed today!" Legitimate organisations do not communicate this way. Slow down, breathe, and call a family member or a trusted friend before doing anything. Using AI well means staying calm, curious, and gently sceptical — and that is exactly the kind of confident user you are becoming.
