Video Calls
~8 min read
Seeing the face of someone you love — even on a screen — is one of the most powerful ways to stay connected. Video calls on WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Zoom have made it possible to visit family across the world without leaving your armchair.
WhatsApp Video is the easiest to start if your family already uses WhatsApp for messages. Open a conversation with the person you want to call, and look for the little video camera icon in the top-right corner. Tap it, wait a moment, and their face will appear on your screen. Make sure you are in a well-lit room — sitting near a window works beautifully — and hold the phone at eye level so the other person can see your face clearly.
FaceTime is built into every iPhone and iPad. Open the FaceTime app (it looks like a green square with a white video camera), find the person in your contacts, and tap their name. If they have an Apple device, you will be connected in seconds.
Zoom is popular for group calls and for speaking with grandchildren at school or people who use non-Apple phones. Ask a family member to send you a meeting link by text or email. When you tap the link, Zoom will open automatically and you will join the call.
A few practical tips: charge your device before an important call, find a quiet room where you can hear clearly, and do not worry if it takes a moment to get the camera angle right. Family members are always patient and delighted to see you — however the picture looks. If a call drops, simply call back. Technology is not perfect, and that is completely fine.
